Shamanic Healing

Shamanic Healing is an ancient and powerful way of bringing balance and change. There are many 'lineages' of shamanism from all over the world, including Northern Europe, Siberia, the Arctic, North, Central and South America, Africa and Australia. In our land, we too have shamanic traditions, though much is hidden and often forgotten. Although Shamans work with the resources of their particular environments, there are common themes. In our society we no longer have shamans, but we can work with the tools and methods of shamanism.

The shamanic practitioner works in conjunction with Spirit. Spirits are manifestations of Universal Energy that appear to us in forms we can understand, and that correspond with our belief systems. We may work with Ancestors, Angels, Spirit Guides or Spirit Teachers, Power Animals, Plant or Tree Spirits, Crystal or Rock Spirits, or the Spirit of a River or weather condition such as Thunder. The healing is totally guided by Spirit. It is the spirits who decide what healing is needed and the form it is to take, and the shamanic practitioner acts as a link between the spirit world and this reality by working as a channel or 'hollow bone'.

Shamanic Healing is a healing of the spirit, which then affects our physical, emotional and spiritual selves. Working with clear intention and with drum, rattle, feathers, sacred herbs and other plants, trees, sacred songs and other sounds, rocks, stones and crystals, ritual and ceremony, shamanic healing can help clear, transform and remove blocked or inappropriate energy (extraction work), bring energy back that is missing (power retrieval), and bring blessings and healing.

Some of the practices used to bring healing include:
  • Ancestral Work
  • Blessing Ceremony
  • Cleansing and Purification
  • Cord Cutting
  • Divination
  • Plant and Tree Spirit Healing
  • Power Animal Retrieval
  • Protection Work
  • Psychopomp
  • Shamanic Extraction
  • Soul Retrieval
  • Spirit Helper Retrieval
  • Working with Cycles of Life and Death

The ability to travel between the worlds to seek wisdom and healing is not restricted to the shaman or shamanic practitioner, and what may be needed is to teach the client to do this for her or himself. This may be done on a one-to-one basis, or as part of a class or workshop.

Shamanic healing is a very powerful type of healing, and often change comes very quickly, from just one or two sessions. Although it can be used for many physical problems, and specific emotional or mental imbalances, it can be particularly useful for long-term conditions that are non-specific and seem not to respond to other forms of treatment, conventional or otherwise, including:
  • never totally recovering from an illness, accident or bereavement
  • always seeking the thing that will make you feel better, e.g. another new relationship, more material objects, another new project
  • feeling the need to seek answers from others, or from elsewhere, because you feel out oftouch with your own deep wisdom
  • feeling stuck in old patterns, in spite of many attempts to make changes
  • feeling out of balance, and getting many minor illnesses
  • feeling overwhelmed, out of control and powerless
  • feeling that you have changed and you no longer recognise yourself
  • feeling disconnected from life, disheartened and disillusioned
  • not being able to say what is wrong, but knowing that something  is wrong

Shamanic Healing for groups, relationships and places

In addition to healing work with individuals, the shaman can assist in bringing healing to relationships between individuals and within communities.

She can also work to bring healing to a place, such as home, office or shop and this is sometimes referred to as 'Space Clearing'.  Shamanic healing can also focus on an area of land, or on Mother Earth as a whole, with the intention of restoring right relationship between Her and her children.
