Quartz crystals have been used for many years to provide an accurate frequency for watches, radio transmitters and receivers, and computers. The property which is utilised in this way is called the piezoelectric effect, which is the name given to the phenomenon that, when compressed or bent, quartz and some other crystals generate a charge or voltage on their surface.
Conversely, if a voltage is applied, quartz will bend or change its shape very slightly.

Over many centuries and in many cultures, crystals have been used for their healing properties, in jewellery and as amulets. In recent years there has been a revival of interest in crystals and crystal healing, as people take back responsibility for their own health and wellbeing.
Just as you might drink a cup of chamomile tea to aid relaxation, take arnica before a dental appointment, or take a few drops of rescue remedy before an exam or interview, you might choose to hold a rose quartz crystal to calm the emotions, or an amethyst to settle a busy mind.
In geological terms a crystal is a mineral with an external geometric shape, in which the constituent atoms are arranged in a regularly ordered, three dimensional repeating pattern, called a lattice. There are seven kinds of crystal lattice, called crystal systems, each having a particular type of symmetry.
The word crystal, comes from the ancient greek word krustallos, which means ice. Originally it referrred only to clear quartz, or 'rock crystal', which was thought to be water that was frozen to such a degree that it could not melt. In geological terms, quartz is just one kind of crystal among many, including ruby, diamond, apophylite, topaz, danburite, and many more.
Sometimes certain crystals are referred to as 'gemstones'. A gemstone is a term used to describe a precious or semi-precious stone that may be used as a jewel when cut and polished. Some organic materials, such as amber, coral and pearls are also considered to be gemstones.
